My dear Claretians.. .

Thank you for your support and your votes... EFREN PENAFLORIDA made it...!

I believe in Efren's advocacy and I support it.

Efren, a Filipino street educator was named the 2009 CNN Hero of the Year for starting a "pushcart classroom" in the Philippines to bring education to poor children as an alternative to gang membership.

The selection of Efren Peñaflorida was revealed last Saturday night by CNN's Anderson Cooper at the conclusion of the third annual "CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute" at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood.

As a child, Peñaflorida picked school over gang life in Cavite City and vowed to create a way for other children to make the same choice.

He created a program that brings books to children in slums and on the streets. And the same 10,000 members of his Dynamic Teen Company have brought reading, writing and hygiene to 1,500 youngsters.

Peñaflorida, now a 28-year-old college graduate, upon accepting the honor said "Our planet is filled with heroes: young and old, rich and poor, man, woman of different colors, shapes and sizes. We are one great tapestry... So to each and every person inside this theater and for those who are watching at home, the hero in you is waiting to be unleashed. Serve, serve well, serve others above yourself and be happy to serve. As I always tell my co-volunteers. .. You are the change that you dream, as I am the change that I dream. And collectively we are the change that this world needs to be."

I was in Bangkok last week for the PAASCU accreditation (Philippine Accrediting Association of School, Colleges, and Universities) of NIVA International School. The experience made me proud how great Filipinos are with the kind of educational system that we have, and which the international academe recognizes... Where government still needs to do more in raising the standards of excellence in Philippine education, I am glad that private citizens and organizations are taking action in helping government on what the later must yet to accomplish.

My involvement with PAASCU for the past 23 years is voluntary and pro bono. But the wonderful feeling of having helped another school become better and being part of helping raise the standards of education is priceless...

It's great to be a FILIPINO... My Dad, Mama, and the rest of my siblings are American citizens. It is just my youngest sister and myself who are not; and who continue to live here in the Philippines. .. I appreciate more now the reason why I gave up my chance of being an American citizen, and sacrificed living away from my parents to stay here in the Philippines, doing what I do now... Indeed, God has greater plans for me...

My dear Claretians, continue to do well in whatever you do. May our "Claretian values and virtues" continue to live in us to make this world a better and happier place to live in for all...

C - compassion
H - humility
E - excellence

R - respect for life
